You may have wondered, whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, when is the perfect time to have sex? Everyone has their own preferences, so we turned to the experts for advice—and the answer is likely to depend on what you’re searching for.
According to Tammy Nelson, Ph.D., a professional sex therapist, the optimal time to have sex will change for each individual and couple. However, each time of day has its own set of advantages.
Morning sex has numerous advantages, ranging from engaging in a brief workout first thing in the morning to starting your day with a flood of feel-good hormones and a healthy-looking afterglow. But there’s also a biological incentive to wake up early.
“Testosterone levels in a man’s body are naturally highest in the morning, which is why men tend to have morning erections,” Nelson explains. “And for early risers, it’s a great way to start the day.”
For those who aren’t early risers, the prospect of morning sex may make you want to hit the snooze button. “Many people like to get up, shower, and brush their teeth before sex, and by then the moment’s gone,” Nelson explains. “For others, morning sex can leave them feeling tired and unenergized.”
Finally, there’s always sex at the end of the day. “Orgasms are a one-way ticket to sound sleep,” Engle explains. Furthermore, “after an amazing sex session and orgasm, your brain releases a cocktail of feel-good hormones such as serotonin and oxytocin.”
Oxytocin promotes love and connection among partners, and releasing it before bed will “leave you with positive feelings about your partner—which you then take into dream world (aka: your subconscious),” Engle says.
Identifying the optimum time of day for you and your partner can offer you something to look forward to and deepen your intimate relationship.
“Having this intimate activity on the books for the two of you a few times per week will bring you closer together,” Engle says.
No matter what time of day it is, orgasms provide general benefits such as better circulation, immunity, and stress reduction.
So, while there may not be an ideal time for everyone, there is no such thing as a truly awful time.
